John Hathaway in Gruenfeld Defence

Take a look at the shortest sharpest Gruenfeld Defence victory that I ever had. Big John Hathaway and I played at the North Penn Chess Club. I was a little older than John, but we often worked on chess together. Years later, John Hathaway won the Pennsylvania State Championship.

Recently I had a flat tire on the Florida turnpike. The State Farm sponsored Safety Patrol from the turnpike authority came by and put on my spare tire for free. They did a nice job. Of course, they already had my money, because I paid their turnpike tolls for years.

One Saturday, John Hathaway and I went to a tournament. We left the Philadelphia area and headed for central PA. Near Valley Forge we got a flat tire. The spare was flat. We got a ride to the service center and got the tire fixed. Then we rolled the tire back to the car. It seemed like miles away as we were aching and sweating in the summer heat.

By the time we got everything fixed, we had spent the entry fee on a tire and were in no mood to show up late to the tournament. So John and I returned to my home and played skittles chess. Our game below is from a North Penn Chess Club contest. It illustrates a Gruenfeld battle over the key central squares d4, d5, as well as c3, c6, b2 and b7.

Hathaway - Sawyer, Lansdale, PA 24.07.1981 begins 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5.e3 0-0 6.Nf3 c5 7.Rc1 [The critical line appears to be 7.dxc5 Ne4 8.Rc1 Nd7 9.cxd5 Qa5 10.Nd4 Nxc3 11.bxc3 Qxa2=] 7...Nc6 [7...cxd4! 8.exd4 Nc6 9.Be2 Bg4 10.c5 Ne4 11.0-0 Rc8=] 8.h3 [8.dxc5!+/=] 8...Qa5 [8...cxd4 9.exd4 Bf5=] 9.Be2 [9.dxc5 Be6=] 9...Ne4!? [9...Be6=] 10.cxd5 cxd4 11.dxc6? [11.exd4 Nxc3 12.bxc3 Qxd5=] 11...dxc3 12.0-0? [Now it is hopeless, but White already stood in a bad way. 12.b4 Qxb4 13.0-0 bxc6-/+] 12...cxb2 13.cxb7 Bxb7 14.Rc7 Nc3 15.Qc2 Nxe2+ 16.Qxe2 Bxf3 17.Qxf3 e5 0-1
