Blackmar Zeller Defence Torning

Richard Torning wins a Blackmar-Diemer Gambit Zeller Defence 3…Bf5 with his favorite variation 4.g4 Bg6 5.Qe2. Both sides have chances, but White comes out on top.

Here is a book with 42 annotated BDG games I played in 2021. Hope you like them.
Chess Strategy Blackmar-Diemer Gambit

Torning – NN, lichess.org, 06.01.2022 begins 1.e4 d5 2.d4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Bf5 4.g4!? Bg6 5.Qe2 [My pet line the Torning gambit against the Zeller Defence.] 5...Qxd4 6.Qb5+ Nd7 7.Qxb7 Rb8 8.Qxc7 e6 [8...Qb6 9.Nd5 I like the pawn majority on the queenside for White.] 9.Nb5?! [9.Bb5! is the best move as it forces the exchange, however, I like to vary.] 9...Qb4+ [9...Qc5=] 10.c3 [Magnus Carlsen (quoting Kasparov) recently commented: "If you can make 10 threats in a row your opponent will blunder!"] [10.Bd2? Qxb2 11.Bc3 Bb4] 10...Qa4?? [10...Qc5= Get rid of the pressure by attempting to trade queens - which I would oblige with after... 11.Qa5 Qb6 12.Qxa7 Qxa7 13.Nxa7=] 11.b3 Bd6?? [11...Qa6 12.Qxb8+ Nxb8 13.Nc7+ Kd7 14.Nxa6 Nxa6 15.Bxa6+-]
12.Nxd6+ Ke7 13.bxa4 Ngf6 14.Ba3 e5 15.Nf5+ Ke6 [15...Ke8 16.Nxg7 mate] 16.Qd6# [Normal White wins by checkmate.] 1–0 [Games notes by Torning]

  1. This is very similar to the Zilbermints Variation in the Von Popiel Gambit. That line goes 1 d4 d5 2 e4 de4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bg5 Bf5 5 Bf6 ef6 6 g4 Bg6 7 Qe2 Bb4 8 Qb5+ Nc6 9 Qxb7 Nd4 10 000

  3. Agree. The Von Popiel is an under-rated variation!

  4. Yes, the Von Popiel 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 is a promising line.
