BDG 3...Bf5 Zeller Gambit 5.Qe2

Richard Torning sent me a Blackmar-Diemer Gambit in his pet Zeller Torning 5.Qe2 line. I'm sure he was having fun. You know your opponent plays poorly when you can make 12 queen moves in a row and still win. Rick writes: "I was pleased playing this game at such a fast rate - 60 seconds each on the clock. I managed to steal 4 pawns from Black."

My Blackmar-Diemer Tactics with 500 combinations and mates.

  1. Hi Tim, I figure if no one else is going to play my variation I should lead by example! As for the 12 queen moves well it may just be my personal record too! Rick T

  2. The database gives two games with 5 Qe2. These are Brambnick - Kuhn, Recklinghausen Open, Germany 2002, and Market - Ambros, Bayern-ch Seniors 12th, Schloss Schney, 2000.

    2. Hi Tim.
Lev may have missed my response last April. But for the record...

Hi Lev and Tim. Yes rare indeed, yet I have managed to play over 50 games in the past couple of years with my pet line. I have mentioned to Tim in emails that I played the BDG back in the 1980s when I was coaching kids (They ended up winning the State school team championship). Unfortunately back then there were no pgn databases or books. I independently analysed it in the 1980s and only after recently reading Tim's books on the BDG did I bring it to the light of day so to speak when I sent him some analysis and many games. the 5...Qxd4 is the trap line I enjoy as in the notes to the game above! On a side note Lev, I have enjoyed many of your variations in the Encyl of Chess Gambits
and UON magazines. Fun stuff champ! I have only found 2 other games with my variation. I believe I am the only one to have used the trap #8 moves on at least three occasions. Eric Jego had not come across my line before either.
      regards
      Rick Torning
